Not to get into too much detail, but let me explain the process: an anagama kiln is shaped like a whale, and every cubic inch counts, so we pack it extremely tightly, especially at the top1. Its quite fun if you are of that mindset. To fire this large group of 150 total plates over the years, I made stacks of 4, separated by little pats of clay so that they wouldn’t just glue themselves together at 2300*.

This group pictured are the tops of all those stacks, which is why they don’t have comet tails on them like the other group of 35. Some people don’t like the comet tails. Some people love them. I don’t know why. Anyway, this group doesn’t have them.

17 of these cloud plates are perfectly perfect. 7 of them have a slight warp that means they don’t stack perfectly to the others. Individually, each of them is totally fine, it’s just a question of stacking. If you wanted all 24, just don’t stack them more than 6 high. If you wanted the 17, you could make them into quite the dramatic sculpture! which is part of why I designed them they way that I did :)

(the third image is just a compare/contrast, for your visual understanding of what I’m trying to explain about the comet trails)

the price stated is for the 17, not the 7 rascals as well

specs: Each plate weighs 2 ¾ lbs. a stack of 6 is 16 lbs. They have an outer diameter of 10 1/4” , and inner plating space of about 9”, with a gradated concavity of 1/4” that keeps a poured sauce in the center. They are 1 1/2” from table to highest point. They are easy for a server to lift.

…yes, they can go through the industrial washer. The painting is embedded in the clay.

I can easily email a high-resolution photo if you’d like to zoom in more and more on the incredible delicacy of the flame marks. I just can’t upload them here because they bog down the website.

*at the risk of repeating myself as you go shopping: for the moment, I am keeping groups intact, because I am reaching out to restaurants only with this page of offerings. Please let me know if you are interested in breaking a group and I will make a note and keep you informed. All these large groups of woodfired work are super-rare and I won’t be making it again in this way if ever. But quite importantly! I love commissions. I cannot make Cloud Plates myself, but I can order them in increments of 100.

Shipping vs Delivery: I live a bit north of Portland, OR. If you’re in the Pacific NW, I would enjoy delivering if you don’t mind paying for gas and a simple place to sleep. A road trip to the Bay area could potentially be enticing but might not make sense for you.

As to points elsewhere- the most accurate way for me to do things is to simply take your packed box to UPS and get them to calculate it and get back to you for your approval. I don’t have a streamlined shipping setup for this, and prices vary so much depending on the time of year and the state of the world.
